How to Clean Alabaster Lighting: A Gentle Care Guide

The safest routine for alabaster lighting is gentle dusting with a clean, soft, dry cloth, following the care instructions supplied with your exact fitting. Avoid experimenting with household cleaners: natural stone and decorative metal finishes may need different treatment.

Whether you have an alabaster pendant in an Australian dining room or wall lights in a UK bedroom, careful handling helps preserve their appearance. This guide covers routine care, not restoration or electrical repairs.

How to clean an alabaster light

  1. Switch the light off and let it cool. Follow the product instructions for safely preparing the fitting for cleaning.
  2. Use safe access. Do not stretch across a table or climb on unstable furniture. Arrange professional help if the fitting cannot be reached safely.
  3. Choose a clean, soft, dry cloth. Check it for grit that could mark the surface.
  4. Dust gently. Use light pressure and avoid pulling on the shade, cable or decorative parts.
  5. Stop if a mark remains. Ask the supplier for advice rather than moving to a stronger cleaner.

For comparison, alabaster lamp manufacturer Collier Webb recommends regular soft-cloth dusting and avoiding abrasives in its Alabaster Cep care instructions. The instructions supplied with your own model remain the primary reference.

What should you avoid?

Unless the manufacturer specifically approves a method for your fitting, avoid soaking, spraying liquids onto the shade, abrasive pads and polishing compounds. Do not assume a cleaner intended for marble, glass or metal is suitable for alabaster.

Keep cleaning products used on neighbouring surfaces away from the light. Spray onto the cleaning cloth for those surfaces, away from the fitting, rather than letting mist settle on the shade or electrical components.

Care for the metal finish separately

An alabaster light may combine stone with brass-coloured, plated, painted or other metal components. These finishes are not interchangeable. Check the specified finish and its care instructions before applying any polish. A product intended for uncoated brass may be unsuitable for a lacquered or plated finish.

What if the stone is stained?

Do not scrape the surface or try solvents, bleach, vinegar or homemade stain treatments. Photograph the mark in daylight and contact the supplier with the model details. Explain what caused the mark if known and whether any cleaner has already been used. This gives the supplier a better basis for recommending a suitable next step.

Natural veining or damage?

Natural alabaster can show lines and colour variation. These features alone do not establish a defect. A new chip, a loose part or a change following impact needs a separate assessment. Compare with earlier photographs and contact the supplier if you are unsure. Do not attempt to glue a structural part of a light fitting yourself.

Maintaining ceiling and wall lights

Dust when a visible layer develops rather than following an aggressive cleaning schedule. Check accessible external parts for obvious changes without dismantling the fitting. If a shade or mounting appears loose, stop using the light until it has been assessed.

Electrical symptoms such as repeated flickering, unusual heat or a burning smell are not cleaning issues. Stop using the fitting and arrange appropriate professional assistance. Cleaning will not resolve a driver, wiring or mounting problem.

Care examples using Hugbel favourites

The following examples use products from Alabaster Atelier's best-selling order, checked in October 2026. They show what to consider before cleaning; always follow the instructions supplied with your own fitting.

Radiance wall lamp: gently dust the accessible stone face with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Do not push or rotate the disc, or pull it away from the wall to reach the back. If the light sits above furniture, arrange safe access before cleaning.

Alabaster Globe Modern Pendant Light

Alabaster Globe Modern Pendant Light

Globe pendant: dust only when you can reach the fitting safely without pulling on its suspension. Do not rotate the shade to expose another side or assume it unscrews. Ask for model-specific instructions if dust has collected around inaccessible parts.

Need help with a mark or loose part?

Prepare the following before contacting Hugbel: your order number, the product name and selected size, a close-up of the issue, a wider photo of the fitting and a note of any cleaner already used. For example: “My Radiance 25 cm wall lamp has a mark on the stone face. I have only used a dry cloth. Please advise on the approved care method.”

For electrical symptoms or a loose mounting, stop using the fitting and arrange professional assessment. Do not use a stronger cleaner to try to resolve a mark without product-specific advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use water on alabaster lighting?

Use dry dusting as the default. Only use a damp method if the manufacturer explicitly permits it for the exact product, and follow those instructions.

Can I remove the shade to wash it?

Do not assume it is removable or washable. Follow the supplied instructions and ask the supplier before disassembly.

Can I use furniture polish?

Avoid it unless explicitly approved for the fitting. A product designed for another surface may leave a residue or affect the finish.
